SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2019
A Universe of Stories
Starting in June, the Tishomingo Public Library will celebrate space exploration to help inspire children of all ages to dream big, believe in themselves, and create their own story. Summer
Reading Programs are designed to encourage your child to keep reading during the summer break to help prevent the “summer slide.” For many families, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where they can access free educational and cultural enrichment activities and programs.
The benefits of Summer Reading Programming for children include:
- Children are motivated to read.
- Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.
- Children maintain their reading skills during the summer break.
- Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.
- Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.
Registration begins May 20th at the library. Children age 2 – 12 are invited to participate in all activities. Program dates are held each Monday in June beginning at 10:00 a.m. and lasting until 11:30 a.m. Special program events and dates are:
Monday, June 3rd – “Out of This World Animals” with Debora Waz from the MS Museum of Natural Science. Debora and her animals are a sure hit with the kids! Be ready to ask questions and explore why animals truly are out of this world!
Monday, June 10th – “Jedi Training Academy” – Come as your favorite Star Wars or out of this world character and win a prize for best costume. Make a lightsaber to defend the galaxy and make a BB8 craft sidekick!
Monday, June 17th – “Galaxy Rock Painting” – Rock painting is a fun way for your child to express their creativity. You may want to keep your rock or hide it for others to find. You can also post a picture of your rocks to our Facebook page at Tishomingo Library Rocks (TLR).
Monday, June 24th – “Astronauts & Space Invaders Party” – We’re having a party and you’re invited! Get ready to giggle. You don’t want to miss our “Aliens Love Underpants” skit. Refreshments will be served after the program and certificates and prizes will be awarded
During each program, we’ll have story time and plenty of crafts and activities your child will enjoy. Our main goal is to help your child develop a love of reading and community. Each year, we encourage children to participate in Timed-Minutes Read. You do not have to attend the summer reading program to participate in Timed-Minutes Read. For every 20 minutes read, a sticker is earned. The child with the most minutes read in their reading category wins a prize. This year the prize will be awarded on July 31st to encourage reading through the summer break.
