More Details Coming on April 2

The Switch 2 is real, and it looks just like the leaks said it would.

Nintendo has finally unveiled the much-anticipated successor to its popular Switch handheld console—the Nintendo Switch 2—set to launch later this year. Fans can look forward to more details being revealed on April 2. In the meantime, the first trailer has dropped, featuring an exciting new Mario Kart installment and showcasing a design reminiscent of the original Switch. However, the Switch 2 promises significant upgrades, including enhanced graphics, improved controllers, and superior performance in TV-docked mode.

The original Nintendo Switch, announced in 2016 and released in March 2017, revolutionized gaming with its innovative modular design and snap-on controllers. While the Switch 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it delivers much-needed enhancements to the beloved formula, making it a compelling upgrade for gamers.

For those eager to get an early hands-on experience, Nintendo is offering free tickets to demo the Switch 2 at locations worldwide starting in April. Registration opens on Friday, January 17, giving fans the chance to be among the first to experience the next evolution of Nintendo gaming.

  • The Switch 2 is bigger, with a bigger screen.
  • There are two USB-C ports now (one on top, one on the bottom). Could this allow glasses connections, maybe?
  • The kickstand has a handle-like shape now. And it reclines all the way back.
  • Yes, there’s a headphone jack.
  • Physical cartridges are accepted.
  • The Joy-Cons have a similar shape and what look like two sets of shoulder buttons now when detached. They also have a different docking pin connector. They seem to magnetically snap onto the console or a controller accessory.
  • There is a new Mario Kart game.
  • The Switch 2 will have exclusive games, and it’ll play Switch games in digital or cartridge form. But Nintendo warns that not all previous games will be compatible.
