Suggested Family Activity 🛟 Sink or Float 🦆

Published by Library Staff on

Play Sink or Float with your family today.  Grab anything that holds water, such as a bucket, a large bowl, or a large pot.  If you do the activity inside, you can also just use your kitchen sink or bathtub.  If you want to do the activity outdoors, you can take your water vessel outside or use a small kid’s pool.  After your container is filled with water, grab a variety of waterproof objects, and have your kids guess (and then test) whether the object will sink or float.  For older, school age children, you can sneak in a little STEM learning by asking them plenty of questions about why they think an item will sink or float.  After they have tested their answer, you can ask more questions if the result was not what they expected.  Was the object heavier than it looked?  How did the material it was made from (paper, plastic, metal, etc.) influence the outcome?   How are the things that float and the things that sink similar or different?  (As with all activities involving water, adult supervision is required.)
