Suggested Family Activity 🌧️🌦️ Playing in the Rain

Published by Library Staff on

As the weather turns warmer, a rainy day 🌧️ is no excuse for being stuck inside, as long as it’s 🌩️ safe, of course.  Check out our tips for fun things to do:

  • The temperature usually because slightly cooler during a summer rain shower, so take advantage of it to cool you off from terrible 🥵 horrible summer heat.
  • Stomp, jump, and roll in mud puddles just like a 🐖 pig – that’s what they do to cool down their bodies, you know.
  • Before the rains starts, make your own rain gauge 🧪 to see how much rain falls.  It’s easy to do – just find a straight, tall container like a Mason jar and mark ½ inch increments on the side using a ruler and a permanent marker like a 🖋️ Sharpie.  Put it somewhere in an open area so that the rain falls right into your container.  You can also recycle a plastic bottle for this project but since it is more lightweight, you’ll need to weigh it down with a few small rocks in the bottom.
  • Find a largish 💧puddle or water running down your driveway and try out your skills to make a dam with assorted objects like sticks 🪵 and pieces of wood.
  • Take your (waterproof) toys such as 🚗 cars and 🛻 trucks outside to play in the puddles.
  • After a rainstorm has come through and the sun is back out, head outside and look for stranded worms 🪱 to rescue!  Use your fingers or a small stick to gently scoop up the worm and move it over to a grassy area.
