SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2019
A Universe of Stories
Ripley Library Will Shoot For The Moon This Summer With a “Universe of Stories”
The Ripley Public Library will be conducting its Summer Reading Program every Friday during the month of June from 11:00am until 12:00pm. Registration begins Wednesday May 22nd. The 2019 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult. Reading certificates can be earned by those in pre-K through sixth grade. The nationwide program will focus on the fun and curiosity of outer space. At Ripley we will be sharing a special emphasis entitled “Shoot for the Moon! Read!” Every child deserves to be a star and reading is the first step in achieving success in school and in life. Each week gives a participant the chance to keep their reading skills sharp so they can be ready for the next school year. We will be having story times, space-related crafts, and opportunities to explore the many worlds beyond our own. Special program events and dates are:
Friday June 7th at 11:00AM – “Shoot for the Moon!” We will be learning about the Moon, its phases, and how we travelled there- Rockets! Coloring activities featuring the Moon will be followed by making foam and cardboard tube rocket ships.
Friday, June 14th at 11AM – “Out of this World Animals” Our special guest Debora Waz from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science will be bringing a variety of reptiles for kids see and learn about that are native to our state. Various kinds of turtles and even a small alligator make this day truly “out of this world”!
Friday June 21st at 11AM – “A Sky Full of Stories” What makes up our night sky? The stars…and we will look at how patterns of stars became constellations and how important they were to our ancestors right down to today. We will be using glitter sticks and stars to make real patterns or just using our imaginations!
Friday, June 28th at 11AM – “Trekking Across the Universe” During this time we will learn about the Milky Way and other solar systems. We will make a model of the Sun, Earth, and the Moon that actually revolves!
Throughout the summer people of all ages are encouraged to stay cool through reading! Our library is a focal point for kids to learn and prevent the “Summer Slide.” Children can participate in the Program even if they do not attend all or any of the Activity Days. Each week the Library will have door prizes to give away as well. This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the first Apollo moon landing in 1969. It will also start a yearlong recognition of the 50th anniversary of the construction and completion of the Ripley Library’s current facility here on North Commerce Street. Both of these achievements started because people reached for the stars!
