Celebrate National Plant a Flower Day!

Spring is just around the corner, bringing beautiful sunshine and warmer temperatures. Today is the perfect day to celebrate National Plant a Flower Day! Planting flowers is a wonderful activity for all ages, including small children. They will love helping to dig in the ground and prepare the soil. Plus, they can help decide which flowers to plant.

Choosing the Right Flowers

When selecting flowers, consider their sunlight preferences:

  • Sun-loving flowers: These thrive in bright sunlight.
  • Shade-loving flowers: These prefer cooler, shaded areas.
  • Combination flowers: These can tolerate both sun and shade.

For guidance on which flowers will do well in your area, visit the Mississippi State Extension office website. They offer detailed descriptions of flowers that grow well in Mississippi.

Involving Children in Gardening

As your flowers start growing, children can help keep them watered. To make this a fun STEM project for older kids, plant flowers from seeds and have them track:

  • Days of sunlight
  • Rainfall
  • Water amounts

They can record these in a notebook and measure the flowers’ growth daily. This long-term project can be so engaging that they will eagerly check the flowers’ progress each day.

Planting in Small Spaces

If you don’t have space in your yard, you can plant flowers in pots on your porch, driveway, front steps, or other outdoor areas. Even if you live in an apartment, you can grow flowers on your windowsills.

Happy planting! 🌸
