Celebrate National Library Week at Iuka Public Library

National Library Week is April 7–13, 2024, and the libraries of Tishomingo County encourage everyone to take part and explore all the services that libraries have to offer. Running with this year’s theme—”Ready, Set, Read!”—your local library branch is planning a week of activities for both library staff and patrons to come together and show their appreciation for the role that libraries play in supporting our community.

Celebrations will begin at the Iuka Public Library with an “I Love My Library” Bookmark Design Contest, which will be judged by age group.  Anyone who wishes to enter can visit the Iuka Library to pick up a bookmark template. The winners will be announced on the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages on Friday, April 12.  Winning bookmarks will be printed and made available at the circulation desk for all patrons to enjoy.

Other National Library Week events at the Iuka Public Library will include a solar eclipse viewing party on Monday, April 8 from 12:00 to 3:00 P.M. with free eclipse-viewing glasses available at the library, a family-friendly movie day on Thursday, April 11 beginning at 3:00 P.M., and dress-up days throughout the week, including “Fun Hat Day” on Tuesday, “Library-Inspired Outfits” on Wednesday, and “Team Shirt Day” on Thursday.

The Tishomingo Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week with a “Grab & Go Book Sale” hosted by the Friends of the Tishomingo Library on Monday, April 8 from 10:30 A.M. to 3 P.M. Cash donations will be accepted, and refreshments will be served. Throughout the week, patrons can also visit the library to pick up a National Library Week goody bag as well as coloring and activity sheets catered to both kids and adults.

By celebrating National Library Week, the Tishomingo County libraries wish to emphasize that libraries are more than just a place to find a good book. Though libraries offer a wide option of physical, digital, and audio books, they are also spaces for citizens to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue passions through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, seasonal crafts, classes, and community programs. Serving additionally as resource centers, libraries give people access to public computers, free Wi-Fi, printing, copying, scanning, children’s puppets and puzzles, donation books, genealogical resources, local history collections, and much more.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
